Framework Structure
The IslandMetrics measurement framework is built around three core components:
Together, these components establish a consistent operational framework for measuring sustainability performance across Caribbean hospitality properties
Core Operational Metrics
The IslandMetrics framework begins with a small set of core operational metrics that reflect the primary resource dynamics of hospitality properties.
These include:
These inputs form the foundation of the platformʼs measurement architecture, linking resource use directly to property activity levels.
Resource Intensity Measurement
Resource intensity is a normalized measurement of resource consumption expressed per unit of operational activity.
Within the IslandMetrics framework, energy and water consumption are normalized on a per occupied room-night basis, translating total usage into comparable intensity values across reporting periods.
This enables resource efficiency to be evaluated in relation to actual occupancy levels rather than total consumption alone.
Sustainability Performance Grades
IslandMetrics generates overall sustainability performance grades ranging from A (highest) to D (lowest). These performance grades are derived from the weighted combination of the normalized resource intensity values of both water and energy consumption.
Higher scores indicate stronger overall operational resource efficiency, providing leadership teams with a clearer view of the propertyʼs overall sustainability standing.
Operational Cost Impact
IslandMetrics translates energy and water consumption into estimated operational cost impact using property-specific utility rates.
This includes both total estimated consumption cost and cost per occupied room-night, allowing properties to understand how resource use is influencing operational expenditure.
By linking resource consumption directly to cost, the framework helps hospitality teams evaluate how improvements in resource efficiency directly influence operational cost control across reporting periods.
Future Framework Expansion
IslandMetrics is designed as an evolving operational sustainability measurement system. Future development will expand measurement capabilities to include additional operational dimensions such as waste management, carbon emissions and solar energy generation.
System Integration
IslandMetrics operates through a secure web-based platform designed to integrate seamlessly into existing hotel operations.
The platform requires no property management system integrations, no software installation, and no changes to existing IT infrastructure. Properties submit monthly operational data and the platform automatically generates structured performance outputs. This enables hospitality teams to begin measuring sustainability performance immediately, without disrupting existing operations.
